Mikumi National Park
..............................................................................................................
Mikumi National Park covers an area of 3230 sq km. and is the third largest park in Tanzania. Because of its accessibility it is one of the most popular parks in Tanzania and is an important center for education where students go to study ecology and conservation.
The park is famous for its tree-climbing lions, which are rarely seen in other parks. Other animals are wild dogs, rare elsewhere in Africa. Elephants, which seem smaller than other African elephants, may be encountered and also frequently observed are giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, wildebeests, eland and Litchterstein's hartebeest. Crocodiles, monitor lizards and pythons are other residents.
Other types of animals are, families of yellow baboons, hippos wallow in the waters of Hippo Pools and are frequently joined by flocks of open-billed storks hunting for molluscs.
Over 300 species of birds have been observed in the park, some of which are Eurasian migrants that stay between October and April.
